Who we are
Working in partnership with the Victorian
Department of Education and the Department of
Health, Safe Schools Coalition Victoria (SSCV) is
a ground breaking program that aims to make all
schools safe and supportive places for same sex
attracted, intersex and gender diverse (SSAIGD)
students, teachers and families.
The first initiative of its kind in Australia, SSCV was
founded as part of Gay and Lesbian Health Victoria
within the Australian Research Centre in Sex,
Health & Society at La Trobe University in 2010. We
work together with an active network of member
schools across all age groups in the government,
independent and faith-based sectors.
This coalition model allows us to reach thousands
of teachers and school staff to raise awareness
and build the skills and confidence needed to
actively support gender and sexual diversity in the
classrooms, corridors and schoolyards of Victoria. If
your school is not already a member, get involved
and gain access to world-class training, support and
resources, and become part of an innovative and
progressive network of schools that are all making a
real difference.
Membership is free, and available on our website.
Why we do it
We believe that schools should be safe and
supportive spaces for each and every student,
regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity,
and this belief is firmly backed up by state and
federal anti-discrimination legislation (Victorian
Equal Opportunity Act 2010, Sex Discrimination
Act 2013). There is clear policy from the Victorian
Department of Education in this area.
Despite this, same sex attracted and gender
diverse young people still experience high levels of
harassment and discrimination at school.
The evidence also tells us that young people who
experience discrimination are at higher risk of
reduced mental and physical health and social
With hundreds of schools joining SSCV from right
across Victoria, we’re committed to making schools
